Capture equipment

Copy stands, film and glass plate holders, lighting and quality control for digitisation

Phase One XF medium-format camera with lens

Why does capture equipment matter?

Capture equipment plays a fundamental role in the digitisation process, as it ensures the accurate, high-quality conversion of analogue information into digital form.

Our capture equipment

  • Stands and mounting accessories
  • Quality control
  • Lighting and light metering

Kaiser and Phase One copy stands and accessories

The copy stands developed by Phase One use motorised AutoColumn technology, which enables efficient work with professional camera systems and specialised software. With the integrated Capture One system, the operator can use the software to set the correct distance between the object and the front lens automatically, according to the required resolution.

The stand provides precise camera positioning, with a geared movable arm and a levelling head that allows fast, accurate adjustment. An LED base-plate insert is also available, which supports the scanning of transparent materials.

Phase One film and glass plate holders ensure smooth handling and an efficient workflow.

They are made of high-quality machined aluminium, with an optically optimised glass base that ensures parallelism and a flat surface. The film carriers work with specially designed clamps that gently tension and flatten film strips.

Golden Thread Target

Quality control in digitisation

The Golden Thread test target family and verification method, developed by Image Science Associates.

It is used to set and check the following parameters: exposure, sharpness, resolution, tone scale, colour, detail reproduction, colour misregistration, uniformity (colour and tone), noise and sharpening. Image quality assessment is an indispensable part of object digitisation. The ISA Golden Thread process examines every element of the entire workflow, so quality control carried out with this tool makes it possible to verify the conformity of the digitisation.

NimbusQA

NimbusQA is a cloud-based service designed to simplify the calibration and verification of digital reproduction systems, specifically for photographers and heritage professionals.

Many well-known digitisation quality-control workflows already exist in heritage preservation; NimbusQA streamlines these workflows for more efficient work.

It provides free access to the analysis of comprehensive reproduction test targets, so that operators can check whether the digitisation meets accuracy and quality standards.

Lighting and light metering

The quality of the lighting is a key factor in the digitisation process. The most important aspects of optimal lighting are:

1. Even illumination

Even lighting prevents overexposed or shadowed areas, which can distort the digitised image or data.

2. Light source quality:

  • Colour temperature: The right colour temperature (usually 5,000–6,500 K, natural white light) ensures accurate colour reproduction.
  • Spectral composition: The spectrum of the lighting device affects how faithfully colours are rendered, so it is important to use light sources with a broad spectrum.

3. Light intensity and contrast

Lighting of the right intensity ensures that details are visible while avoiding overexposure, which can cause a loss of detail.

4. Avoiding shadows and reflections

Placing the light at the right angle minimises unwanted shadows and reflections, especially when digitising glossy or textured surfaces.

Sekonic L-858D light meter

The Sekonic Speedmaster L-858D is a multifunctional wireless light meter that supports multiple brands. It can measure flash duration and short flashes, such as those produced by HSS (High Speed Sync) technology, providing precise flash control.

Nanlite lights

The Nanlite Compac 100B is a professional continuous-light LED panel that emits even light over a large surface. It is also ideal for the even illumination of large objects, whether flat or three-dimensional.

Profoto flash units

Profoto was founded in 1968 by two photographers; the company manufactures flash systems.
