CultArm3D
Automatic robotic-arm 3D digitisation with a Phase One camera – developed by Fraunhofer IGD

3D scanning of art objects
In the museum world there is a growing demand for the art treasures held by institutions to be digitised in 3D. It was this demand, among other things, that gave rise to the CultArm3D.
The CultArm3D scanner was developed by Fraunhofer IGD (Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research). A camera system by the Danish camera manufacturer Phase One was mounted on the robotic arm. In designing the robotic arm, the specialists set out to achieve high-quality 3D scanning, which is why Phase One’s 100-megapixel iXG, a camera system developed for digitising flat objects, was mounted on the arm. For even illumination, the camera was fitted with special lighting.
3D digitisation made easy
Specialists pay particular attention to safety when digitising cultural heritage. In the event of a power cut, the robotic arm locks, protecting the object from damage.
The greatest challenges are posed by works with different coatings, reflective surfaces and objects made of bronze or gold. With CultArm3D technology, art objects with different surfaces can also be digitised well.

Practical applications of CultArm3D
- Contact-free examination of art treasures
- High-quality digital content
- Producing an accurate copy of the object being digitised
- Facilitating research
- Better and more detailed knowledge of the object
Manufacturer: Verus Digital (a spin-off company of Fraunhofer IGD). The CultArm3D automated photogrammetry system uses a Phase One iXG camera for museum-quality, colour-accurate 3D reproduction.
