All Saints Cope (Mindenszentek palástja)
The All Saints Cope, found in the Archiepiscopal Treasury, Kalocsa, is a timeless artefact, which Péter Peti captured for posterity with a Phase One camera system. You can read further details about the cope and the stole that belongs to it below:
Cope: purple silk fabric interwoven with gold thread. Woven in below the shield-shaped section: GRAND PRIX E. U. PARIS 1900. Above it: in the centre a shield, with a lion’s head and French lilies in it, on either side a crescent moon, and in its curves a lion’s head with its tongue stuck out. In the centre of the shield-shaped section the Coronation of Mary, with a gilded tassel and fringe on its border. Its entire surface is filled by the Adoration of All Saints; the saints stand densely side by side, with the inscription of their names on their haloes. At the edge of the cope, two angels one above the other hold a banderole each, and three angels each hold the symbols belonging to the inscriptions on the banderoles. These are as follows: Domus Aurea (castle), Turris Aburnea (tower), Speculum Justitia (scales), Faederis Arca (Ark of the Covenant), Jenua Coeli (bastion), Stella Matutina (bouquet). Its border is gilded passementerie interwoven with thread; on the left, above the border, two French lilies are woven into a small square. Wine-red rep lining. Gilded, quatrefoil metal clasp with a cherub’s head in it. Stole: made of the same material as the cope. Along its length, cherubs’ heads; in the centre and at both ends, a cross with lilies; above it, angels making music, with banderoles inscribed “Tibi anelli Cherubini et Seraphini” and Sanctus respectively. On the borders of its two ends, the same tassel and fringe as on the shield-shaped section.
